Vintage World Globe

R500.00 R300.00

For having sold so many globes over the years, I’m a little embarrassed that before now I’ve never noticed that globes often feature the name of the cartographer responsible for the mapping! Today’s globe is the work of Gustav Brueckmann, Replogle’s original cartographer.

Spotting the name of the cartographer also made me read up a bit more about Replogle – I always new that they were the world’s largest manufacturer of globes, but I didn’t realise that the founder of the company, Luther Replogle (1902-1981), also co-founded Danish globe manufacturer, Scanglobe, and that in 1988 Replogle bought Scanglobe’s remaining interest – which means that they now own the two best known brands in the world of cartography! It was also Luther Replogle who introduced the idea of having globes in homes – previously they had been limited to use in academic settings, and its an idea that seems to have made a comeback in recent years with globes becoming super popular, often selling for upwards of R1000! Today’s version, which sits neatly on its metal base, is pretty attractive and pretty neat for its years – there’s some expected wear to the globe itself (they are made of paper after all!), as well as one or two scratches to the metal base, but on the whole it’s in really decent vintage condition!
