Vintage Sunbeam Mixmaster

I was very confused when I first started researching today’s Sunbeam ‘Mixmaster’! I’ve always known Sunbeam to be an American brand, but suddenly our mixer, ‘Model 9B’ was popping up as an Australian product – what the heck? So I did a bit of digging, and to be honest I’m still slightly confused! It seems Sunbeam Australia started out in 1902 as a small branch of the American group, Chicago Flexible Shaft Company, who in 1946 changed their name to Sunbeam Corporation – I’m not sure why though? Perhaps they were bought out by Sunbeam? The story gets more confusing though as in 1987 the company came into Australian ownership, only to be sold to Sunbeam Products Inc (the American Sunbeam brand) in 2016! Clear as mud!

What the Australian Sunbeam brand seems to be most famous for though, is today’s mixer, which was the first Mixmaster manufactured in Australia – they appear to be rather proud of it! Which they probably should be – if you consider that today’s mixer dates to 1948 and is still going strong, the Ozzies must have done a pretty decent job of it! Understandably the paintwork is a bit chipped and yellowed in places, but the motor still sounds strong, and even more impressively the mixer still has both of its original mixing bowls, plus the juicer attachment!
