I think I made a mistake with this wonderful Ercol ‘Goldsmith’ rocking chair – we started sanding it back to its raw wood (it’s made of the most beautiful elm wood), but half way through I panicked about how long it was going to to take and decided to paint it black. The black looks quite smart, but I have to say, I think the natural wood would have looked amazing! Unfortunately you have to think about costs in this game, and the longer a restoration project takes, the less wiggle room there is. But it’s still a great chair – the proportions are slightly more petite than your standard rocking chair, which means that it’s a lot less bulky (and in my opinion, attractive!), and having seen the condition of the wood underneath the paint I can tell you that it’s a nice solid piece of furniture.
Note: The black enamel’s been painted on with a brush, not sprayed, so you can see the brush strokes in places (see pics)
