Vintage Ribbed Glass jar

R145.00

Ordinarily I wouldn’t be tempted by a lone jar with a slightly battered lid, but these green depression-era jars are pretty rare, so I’ll never turn down a chance to nab one! Often referred to as Hoosier jars, they were actually manufactured by Owens-Illinois, inventor of the automatic bottle-making machine, and today the world’s leading glass container manufacturer. Hoosier actually refers to those old freestanding kitchen cabinets that were popular in the early 20th century, before built-in cupboards became standard in the 1920s. Presumably Owen-Illinois custom made these jars for the cabinets, which is why they’re commonly called Hoosier jars. A nice bit of history!

P.S. When it was first produced our lovely little green ribbed jar would have had a metal label, specifying whether it was for tea, sugar, etcetera. You can still see where the label would have sat though, making it an even more charming kitchen jar!
