Vintage Replogle Globe

R650.00

Believe it or not this is the most expensive globe we’ve ever bought, and that includes all the wonderful illuminated globes we’ve sold! I see globes for sale quite often, but they’re normally priced at more than we sell them for on Mint, which makes finding stock pretty difficult! So when I spotted this charming Replogle globe the other day (which came with a great story from the seller about how he had rescued it from a barn!) I thought perhaps it was time I accept that globes have just become very pricey items, and sometimes I need to cough up for them!

Sadly that means that today’s globe is a bit pricier than we normally sell our globes for, but it’s a great example, and is in overall good condition. Also we can date it quite accurately – I spotted an unusual name I hadn’t seen on a globe before – the Central African Empire. It seems that in 1976 the president of the Central African Republic, Jean-Bédel Bokassa, got tired of being a boring old president and declared himself an emperor, spending a third of the government’s annual income on his coronation ceremony! But sadly for Bokassa his reign was short lived, and by the  1 September 1979 the Central African Empire had fallen, with the country returning to a republic. So seemingly then our rather lovely American-made globe dates to sometime between 1976 and 1979! There are one or two small tears in the paper, but generally speaking it’s in really decent nick for its forty odd years!

Dimensions: Approx. 38cm tall x 30cm in diameter
