Vintage Japanese Ashtray

R220.00

I probably didn’t choose the best background to photograph this handblown Japanese ashtray – it looks slightly green in the photos, but in reality it’s a beautifully clear blue glass, with that classic white swirl that makes these Kamei ashtrays so identifiable. According to one blogger, Kamei were one of the main players in quality Japanese art glass in second half of the twentieth century. I can’t seem to find anything definitive regarding the years that they were in business, but most peoples seem to date these ashtrays to the 1960s, with the last reference to the glass factory being in the mid-80s. So we’re probably looking at a piece of glass that’s in the region of fifty years old. Happily though, for its years it’s in excellent condition, with the only issue worth mentioning being a slight defect on the base of the ashtray, otherwise it’s pretty much mint!
