Vintage German Creamer

R165.00

How lovely is this little German creamer? I just love her! It’s difficult to date her without a maker’s mark, but I think a good guess would be that she dates to around the middle of the last century. The ‘Foreign’ stamp should be a clue as to her date as the marking was legislated, but unfortunately it isn’t really*. I don’t think it really matters though – we know enough: she’s definitely vintage, in fantastic condition, and is going to be a big hit at your next tea party!

Dimensions: 15.5cm tall x 8cm in diameter

* In 1890 the US passed the ‘McKinley Tariff Act’, imposing increased tariffs on imports, and requiring all items imported into America, regardless of the country of origin, to be marked as ‘Foreign’. At the same time the UK also imposed similar requirements. Eventually the requirement was dropped, but even after the laws changed a number of porcelain factories carried on stamping their goods as Foreign as a way of getting around identifying where the items were really manufactured, for example during WWII German manufacturers may not have been super keen to display a ‘Made in germany’ stamp, so would just stamp their goods ‘Foreign’
