Vintage English Donkey Figurine

R140.00

I was quite surprised when I looked at the underside of our wee donkey and saw a ‘Made in England’ stamp – he just doesn’t look very English to me? And the name, ‘Szeiler, was also confusing – definitely not British! It turns out that Studio Szeiler was started by Hungarian-born Joseph Szeiler, after he came to the UK to look for work as coal miner. Not being able to find employment, Szeiler landed up working at a number of pottery houses, and soon discovered a love for modelling. Inspired by his work, Szeiler signed up at the Burslem School of Art, eventually opening his own studio in 1951.

Studio Szeiler produced tableware and giftware, but specialised in animal figurines, most of which were modelled by Joseph Szeiler himself. I’m not sure of the exact date of today’s donkey, but a good guess is that he dates to the early 1960s, which is when a number of similarly styled animals were produced.

NB: Our mule is rather petite – please pay attention to the dimensions below….
