Small Enamel Dish with Lid

I’m not quite sure what this lovely vintage enamel dish would originally have been used for? There’s a chance that it was meant for some or other medical purpose, but it could just as easily have been a baking dish of some description? I really have no idea – but I do know that I love it! The black lid is quite unusual, and I love the shape, which is a bit more rounded than your average enamel tray. A great piece of vintage enamelware in decent condition for its years.

NB: Please pay attention to the dimensions below – this is not a large dish

I think these dishes were used to store food in the fridge. Enamel and glass (one finds similar oblong or square glass dishes with flat lids) were used for this purpose before the invention of plastic. It is hard to believe, but the refrigerator was patented before the invention of plastic.
