This vintage embroidery sampler had me a bit flummoxed. At first glance I thought it was written in Afrikaans, but then Justin pointed out that it looked more like Dutch? A google search showed that it appears on a lot of Afrikaans websites, which confused matters further, until I read that it’s attributed to the Cape Dutch settlers, which finally made a bit of sense! The bit that I understand reads as a very sweet message, and I love the needlework, which has been pretty expertly executed! I also quite like how simple the frame is, and it’s great that whoever framed it chose to use non-reflective glass. There is some damage to the frame, but I don’t think it’s bad enough to warrant reframing it.
A quirky bit of wall art that will need just the right space to show it off properly – it’s not very large so might get lost if you hang it in the wrong place….
