If I’d had to guess I would have thought that today’s rather crazy (but completely fabulous!) ceramic bust would have been an Italian design, but rather surprisingly it seems that it’s actually South African! From the little bit of information that I managed to track down, it looks like Faiarte Ceramics was an Indian owned ceramics business that specialised in decorative ware and operated out of Rustenberg. I’m not sure how long they were in business for, but there’s a reference to a labour dispute online, which is dated 1985, which is more or less when I suspect our lovely lady was made. Given that she’s probably between thirty and forty years old, she’s in remarkably good condition, with a crisp white glaze complemented by that brilliant gold!
A wonderfully kitsch, and fairly unusual piece of South African pottery that will look absolutely amazing in the right space.
