I’m not sure that the photos of this mirror do it justice! I bought it at a collectibles auction a few months back, but it looked quite different then – the wooden backing had a bit of embellishment that came around the front of the frame, and was painted grey. I think it was probably original, dating it to around the 1940s, but personally I think it detracted from what’s essentially a very plain, but very handsome mirror. We’ve sanded the edges of the wood (as they were painted grey) and attached new mirror clasps, but the back of the mirror is quite scratched, and the silvering has started to wear in places. Personally I think the wear adds to the charm of the mirror – I’m not a fan of the shabby-chic aesthetic, but sometimes a bit of wear adds a certain authenticity to a piece, if you know what I mean?
