Vintage Rosenthal Coffee Set

It may not be the bold colours of the ’50s and ’60s that I love so much, but I was immediately attracted to this rather delicate porcelain Rosenthal coffee set for its beautiful pattern! I’m not sure whether it was intended or not, but to me those grey swirls look a lot like hearts! I probably shouldn’t be questioning the design though, because it’s from one of America’s most famous designers, so I’m pretty sure if they look like hearts that’s what they’re meant to look like! Raymond Loewy is considered by many to be the ‘father of industrial design’ and put his hand to a remarkable number of projects – everything from cigarette packaging (Lucky Strike) to petrol companies (Shell), and as evidenced today, a line of china that he developed in the 1950s for the porcelain factory, Rosenthal. While the designs were produced in the 1950s, Rosenthal continued manufacturing them through to the ’80s, so it’s difficult to date this set, and it’s such a classic look that it really could have been made at any time. The set is obviously missing one of its cups and saucer’s, but the remainder of the set is immaculate, with not a mark on it! It’s a very petite set, so would be ideal for espresso. It’s not the type of set that you’re going to use everyday, but when your in-laws pop round for a visit you’ll be able to serve them in serious style!

P.S. These pieces sell for a small fortune – the coffee pot alone regularly sells for around R600 online and can go for even more!
