Small Porcelain & Wood Canisters (Set)

These very sweet porcelain spice jars are a bit deceiving – they’re marked on the base ‘Blue Danube, Reg US Patent Off’, which gives the obvious impression that they’re American, but in truth they were made in Japan.

Based on the famous Meissen Onion design, the Blue Danube pattern was first developed for export in 1951 and was originally sold exclusively to Lipper International Inc of New York, importers of fine glass and ceramics.

Amazingly Lipper continue to import Blue Danube china today, but the maker’s mark on our lovely porcelain canisters is the earliest one that was used, so presumably these are early Blue Danube. The condition of the cork stoppers (which are topped with wood) also suggests that these jars have some age to them, but fortunately their condition is still good enough to be completely functional – and still really beautiful!

P.S. A single Blue Danube spice jar can sell for as much as $30 (R420)

Dimensions: Each jar measures 9.5cm tall x 5cm in diameter
