I bought this marble box for two reasons – one because I thought it was a very simple, but very attractive box, and two because of the brass plaque on the inside of the box that reads, “Made from marble taken from the walls of the stock exchange building demolished 1970” – everyone loves a good story, don’t they! So apparently the building in question was the London Stock Exchange, and the box, which is actually a cigarette box, was given (or sold, I’m not sure?) to members of the stock exchange. Apparently the boxes were in high demand, and in 1970 could be bought for £25, when the average weekly wage was only £32! Now, isn’t that a nice bit of history! Plus it really is a lovely little box – just perfect for all your treasured trinkets!
