Small Bauhaus Watering Can

R1,250.00

Some people are going to think that we’ve accidentally added a zero to the price of today’s wee watering can, but in truth we’re missing a zero if you look at the going rate! I know that sounds nuts, but believe it or not this small brass watering can regularly sells for around the R15 000 mark, and in the past has reached a sale price of as much as $2000 (R28 000)! This may be one of the most collectible items we’ve ever had for sale on Mint!

Designed in 1952 by Carl Auböck (1900-1957), a Bauhaus trained designer celebrated for his approach to modern industrial design, today’s watering can was produced by the family firm of metalsmiths, Werkstätte Auböck. The business is still operating today from its original Viennese townhouse, with the fourth generation of the Auböck family, Carl Auböck IV and his sister, Maria Auböck, at the helm.

According to one site, which has one of our watering can’s for sale for an eye-watering £820 (R15 000), “this handmade indoor watering can has superb proportion, weight and balance”, and is a “beautiful piece that embraces the Modernist era – it’s perfect for watering your plants or enlivening any room”. Well for that price I think it should do a bit more than enliven your room – I’d want it magically watering my ferns all by itself!
