Now here’s something you don’t see everyday – model SAA aeroplanes that were designed as electronic toys! I see the stationary models from time to time (normally selling for an arm and a leg!), but I think this is the first time that I’ve come across toy versions that were designed to move. Sadly one of the planes no longer works at all, so is really only any good as a model, but even just as display item these planes are great – the body of the planes are made from tin, with plastic wings, and their black plastic bases that were originally designed to move the aircraft, make for nice stands for display purposes. The one plane does still work, although it only goes round and round in circles (click here to watch a video of the toy Boeing 747 in action!) – it doesn’t ‘lift off’ and ‘fly’ as it was intended to. But while it would be great if these toys were completely functional, I think they’re more valuable as models to be preserved for future generations – although you should definitely talk them out now and again and let your kids (or nieces in my case) give them a push around the lounge!
Dimensions: Each plane measures 30cm long x 32cm wide (across wing span) x 9cm tall
