Royal Copenhagen ‘Fajance’ Bowl

R170.00

I was drawn to this small, but stylish dish the moment I spotted it, and of course felt completely vindicated by my lust when I saw the Royal Copenhagen stamp on its base! I love anything Danish (who doesn’t it!), but Royal Copenhagen in particular has a special place in my heart, being the makers of the famous Christmas plates that my family have collected for years. And it turns out that today’s dish may be even more special than my beloved holiday plates – and possibly more collectible! The pattern, which goes by the appropriate name of ‘Seedburst’ was designed by Ellen Malmer for Royal Copenhagen seemingly sometime during the early 1970s. Malmer, who specialised in faience or ‘fajanceware – a fine tin-glazed pottery on an earthenware body – is one of Royal Copenhagen’s most sought after designers, with her designs selling for a small fortune. A set of three Seedburst dishes is currently for sale online for an impressive $375 (R5800), but even single dishes can sell for upwards of a R1000!
