Retro Writing Bureau

I don’t often buy writing bureaus, but I really liked the simple design of today’s secrétaire – plus I can see how easy it would be to convert it into a drinks cabinet – just replace the writing mat with a piece of mirror, and you’re good to go!

The bureau was made by Remploy, a British manufacturer with an interesting history. The business was founded in 1945 by Ernest Bevin, the Minister of Labour, and was owned by the British government. The idea behind it was to provide skills and employment opportunities for men who had been injured during the war. Remploy is still in operation today, and is one of the UK’s largest employers of disabled people, although they sadly no longer manufacture their fantastic furniture, but seem to rather function as a specialist employment agency – which is a real pity because they seemed to really know what they were doing!

P.S. Visit www.scaramangashop.co.uk to find out more about the history of Remploy, and to see the type of furniture they manufactured
