Retro Wooden Sideboard

Not all furniture was created equal, and today’s sideboard is definitely a bit more special than a lot of the sideboards that we sell. For starters, just like at those elegant legs – they’re about as sexy a table legs come, and then you have those beautifully turned wooden handles – I love the idea of wood on wood! I don’t know for certain who made it, but the locks were manufactured by MLM Lehmann, which is a British make, so it’s quite possible that this is an English piece of furniture. The handles also look very similar to those used by Avalon, so that’s another possibility.

From the little I’ve read it seems Avalon were based in Somerset and started out making school and church furniture, eventually moving into the local domestic market, where they were fairly successful until they closed their doors in 1985. If this is one of their pieces – and I’m really not sure that it is – it would date to about twenty years earlier that that, around the 1960s. It does have some wear to reflect its age, with the lining on the cutlery drawer being a bit worse for wear, and the veneer edging being damaged in one or two spots, but the overall look is still very neat – and very stylish! I’d certainly be happy to have this sideboard sitting in my dining room or lounge!
