When I first spotted this armchair, I thought “well that must be Danish!”, but having recently stumbled upon a British Greaves and Thomas chair in a similar style, I got to thinking about how people often mistake the retro South African furniture in our own home for Scandinavina designs – the truth is that like fashion, furniture design follows trends, and at one point this Scandi-style was inlfuencing designers from all over the world, so unless you know the provenance of a piece it’s not always super easy to tie down a maker. I don’t think it really matters though – accept I suppose in terms of value – this is a seriously beautiful piece of furniture, regardless of who manufactured it. Just by looking at the detail (I love the way the arms reach all the way up the back!) it’s easy to spot the serious level of craftsmanship involved in the design of this armchair. Whoever they were, they definitely knew a thing or two about furniture making!
