Over the years I’ve developed a few obsessions (I think it comes from the gazillion hours I’ve spent shopping, ogling all of the retro treasure out there!), and bizarrely one of these obsessions is salad servers! A strange thing to focus on, I know, but you seldom find super attractive servers, so when you do you take notice. These pairs are two of my favourites – they’re quite different to each other, but both are equally special in my eyes. The skinny plastic and wooden pair are Danish, designed by Helge Benzin, and are quite unusual in that the plastic is quite flimsy (and almost a bit cheap looking), but combined with the wood, it makes for a very striking and very stylish design! The red pair (a kind of salmony red) are made of much more durable plastic, and at first glance appear quite standard, but then you notice that the shapes are slightly asymmetrical, and that the plastic isn’t your run of the mill supermarket plastic, but something more along the lines of melamine – great quality and great design!
Note: The red servers are in excellent nick and look like they’ve barely been used, but the Danish salad servers have some wear where the plastic is a bit scratched from use, the wear isn’t horribly noticeable though. A boxed set of these Danish salad servers is currently for sale on eBay for around R600!
