I have hunted and hunted, but I can’t seem to find any real information on this fabulous retro lounge suite! I know that it was made by Lubis, who from what I understand made reproductions of now-iconic international designs for the local South African market, but that’s all I know – so frustrating because with a design as striking as this there has to be a name behind it! Although I suppose it doesn’t really matter (although wouldn’t it be nice to know?) – what matters is that it’s a mad cool suite that, I have to say, I think we’ve done a pretty decent job of restoring. It was in a right sorry state when we found it, with rather awful flat cushions, and a badly damaged arm that was broken off. You can see a very faint mark where Justin joined the arm, and a slightly lighter patch of wood where he added a new piece of wood (how clever is my husband?), but the damage is really only noticeable if you go hunting for it, and generally speaking I think it’s condition is probably not far off from what it would have looked like when it was first manufactured, presumably sometime in the 1960s.
I know it’s a lot of dosh to pay for a lounge suite (although probably still less than a halfway decent modern settee), but personally I think it’s well worth it! This lounge suite has oodles of style – it’s the kind of furniture you see in decor mags and drool over (well at least I do)!
NB: Unfortunately the lounge suite is only for sale in Joburg.
