I think that these are the very last pieces from our trip to New Zealand at the end of last year. They’re referred to as Titian Ware, which the sales lady was very proud to tell me was one of the Kiwi’s most famous pottery brands. I had never heard the name before, but after doing a bit of research it seems that they can be likened to a name like Lucia Ware in South Africa.

Titian were a family run business that was started by Cameron and Dorothy Brown in the early 1950s, specialising in decorative ware. In the 1960s Crown Lynn became concerned by Titian’s expansion, and began buying up shares, effectively taking over the company in 1968. The Browns continued to work in the factory under Crown Lynn, but Cameron and Dorothy missed their independence, and in 1972 they set up a new factory. The Aquila series, which today’s unusually shaped canisters form part of, were created in the new factory under the newly formed umbrella brand, Orzel. Most people though, refer to all the pieces produced by the Browns as Titian Ware.

P.S. I’m not sure what our jars would have been used for? Perhaps tea, coffee and the like? Unusually the jars aren’t glazed on the inside. Also because of their age, the cork stoppers are a bit worn looking, although still functional, and luckily the canisters themselves are free of any serious wear.
