Well clearly the chaps at Auto World were very serious about their competitions, because I’ve never come across a trophy quite as impressive as this one! It’s a little nuts truth be told! I’m not certain whether the base is correct or not – when I bought the trophy there were a few of these plastic bases lying in the box, minus their metal trophies, and I nabbed this one because it fitted perfectly, but the earliest date on the base is 1978, and looking at the amount of wear to the plating on the actual trophy I would have thought that it was older, but perhaps it just wasn’t very well looked after? The copper underneath the silver plating is very clearly starting to show through, but I really don’t mind that – for me it adds the character of the piece. I’ve photographed the trophy with some large philodendron leaves (which shows you just how large this trophy is!) because that’s where I see it living – in a bathroom or living room, set amongst a selection of pot plants.
