Murano Geode Bowl/Ashtray

R360.00 R252.00

I paid a fair bit for today’s bowl, despite it not being quite as neat as a lot of the glass that we sell, but I was so taken by the unusual design that I thought it was worth taking a chance on! The striking layered glass is the result of a Murano technique known as sommerso, which in Italian literally means ‘submerged’, and allows you to see the distinct amber and turquoise glass so clearly. And then you have the wonderful shape of the bowl, which is popularly known as geode. Geode bowls take their name from geode rocks – stones that have been neatly sliced in two, creating that perfectly flat, wide rim. It really is quite a masterpiece!

Dimensions: 14cm long x 11cm wide x 5cm tall

Note: It’s difficult to attribute this ashtray to a particular maker, but Seguso Vetri d’Arte are well known for geode bowls, so it’s likely that’s who’s responsible for our lovely bowl. Geode bowls by Seguso can sell for anything from fifty quid (R890) to $500 (R7000)
