Mid-Century Carved Teak Bird

R250.00 R150.00

I’m completely in love with this mid-century wooden sculpture of what to me looks a bit like a penguin, but could also be a bird (although a penguin is a bird isn’t it?). I love the smoothness of the teak, and the seamless way in which the different pieces of wood have been joined to form the bird – true craftsmanship! The piece was made by Alan Middleton, who from the bit I’ve managed to find out, seems to have been a Canadian sculptor working during the 1960s in Canada, who seemed to focus almost exclusively on birds! I suppose it’s the fluidity of the shape of the animals that he liked so much – and boy was he good at translating that vision into wood – this is a seriously beautiful carving!

NB: This carving isn’t as large as it appears in the photos – please pay attention to the dimensions below

Dimensions: 24cm tall x 10cm wide x 13cm deep

Would be interested in any similar Scandi fish or birds. Thanks, Norman
