I’ve called this unit a kist, really out of a lack of a better word for it – truth be told, I’m not really sure what I should call it, or what it would have been used for! But that doesn’t take away from the fact that I think it’s superb piece of furniture! Made from solid wood (which is very unusual for retro furniture), the ‘lid’ is divided into three sections that can be lifted individually, or all together. The hinges are designed so that once lifted, the lids can remain suspended in mid-air, which is great if you’re digging around, not quite sure where whatever it is you’re after is stashed! Obviously the downside to the cabinet being a top opener (as opposed to something like a sideboard where the doors typically open outwards), is that it limits what you can place on top of it. It would make, for example, a great television stand, but if you use it for storing goods that you want ready access to, then that’s not ideal. One option is to hang your telly above the kist (like we have in our own home – see last photo), or alternatively just use it to store items that you don’t use that often. You could also use it as a bench or blanket box at the end of your bed, although it is quite high, so your mattress would need to be nice and thick to match it.
Whatever you choose to use it for, I’m certain that this unusual piece is going to look absolutely fantastic in its new home!
P.S. It looks like the hinges at the back of the unit have been changed several times as there are loads of old holes. Fortunately though you won’t notice this once the unit is in place against a wall, or a bed
