Having grown up in Durbs I have a real soft spot for anything that bears the name of my home town, so while vintage jars and bottles aren’t really my thing, I just couldn’t resist this oversized vintage English jar, manufactured by Pearsons of Chesterfield. Aside from the personal connection, I also like the fact that the jar has such generous proportions – it really makes it stand out – and it doesn’t hurt matters that it’s in such fantastic condition! I chatted to a good friend of mine, Marcus, who’s something of a vintage bottle aficionado, and he tells me that jars this size were used to store everything from preserves and flour to acid – basically if we knew what business Taj Company were in, we’d have a clue as to what the bottle was originally used for. Not that it’s ever really going to be used for storing dry goods again (it would be pretty cool if it was though, wouldn’t it ?) – nowadays I think it would be put to better use as an impressive vase or giant door stop….
