Large Antique French Mirror

R1,000.00

When we bought this mirror it was covered in layers and layers of paint, so I’m quite delighted with how it turned out – I think the wood looks really charming! I was even more delighted though by what we discovered when we took the backing off the mirror to do the restoration. There, hidden away, was the most lovely French maker’s label – and a date stamp! I’ve been a bit cheeky calling the mirror antique, but it’s as near as damn it – from we can make out our mirror was made on the 26th July 1925! The paper label (which has once again been covered up) has the maker’s name, Jules Spruyt Smets & Fils Malines, as well as the words, “Argenture Perfectionnée”, which translates from French to English as “improved silvering”. The silvering has actually started to age, but hey, it’s nearly a hundred years old, so I think we can forgive it! Plus the mirror has tarnished in the most romantic way possible – I think a lot of people would pay good money to get this effect on glass – it really is quite beautiful!

P.S. It seems Jules Spruyt Smets & Fils Malines mirrors are seriously collectible! I’ve only managed to find one of these mirrors still for sale and it was selling for a very impressive 2200 Polish Zloty (roughly R8300)! Also please note that while we’ve done our very best ro refurbish the mirror, the frame is slightly skew….
