Japanese NyX Folding Chairs (Each)

I’ve been very excited to put these beautiful NY Folding Chairs up for sale – aren’t they quite something? I first saw the design a few years back in a leather worker’s shop. He had found some of these frames and was planning on redoing them in leather – I never saw how they turned out, but the finished product must have been amazing! Fast forward a few years and I spotted a rather derelict version being used by somebody as a chair in a shop – a bit of haggling and ten minutes lady the poor shop assistant was sans a place to put her bottom! But the chair was in a really sorry state with a great big chunk of wood missing from one of the arms (since expertly fixed by Justin – see photos), and it was only when I happened upon a second NY Folding Chair that I found the impetus to get going on them. Since then we’ve sanded down the arms, given the chrome frames a really good rub, and reupholstered the seats in this glorious mustardy yellow – I think Japanese designer Takeshi Nii would be more than happy with what we’ve done with his iconic design!

The NY folding chair was designed by Takeshi Nii and produced in Japan in 1970. The chair was named ‘NY’ after the designer’s family name Nii, and also the Danish word for ‘new’, or ‘fresh’. The chair has won numerous awards and became a permanent feature in the MOMA collection in 1970.

P.S. These chairs are seriously collectible and sell for an average of $1000 each online

Dimensions: Each chair measures 97cm tall x 56cm wide x 56cm deep (because they’re newly upholstered the chairs don’t fold that easily so the dimensions are for the chairs opened out)
