For a moment I thought that this classic Ice-O-Mat might actually be Australian, despite it looking distinctively American, because for some reason that’s where a lot of these ice crushers seem to have ended up! But no, Rival, who manufactured the ‘O-Mat’ range of household utensils and appliances, were based in Kansas City, which makes a lot more sense! They opened their doors in 1932, with their first product being the ‘Juice-O-Mat’, and went on to produce a variety of kitchen products in the ‘O-Mat’ series. Most sites date this ice crusher, which is as solid as anything and has three different settings (depending on how fine you want your ice), to the 1950s. The style is definitely in keeping with the ’50s, but going on the company’s history, I would have thought it could have been a bit earlier – but it’s definitely from around that era. There’s a bit of wear to the paintwork, but most of the damage is to the plastic box that catches the ice – it has plenty of scratches, and a small nick along the edge where the chrome clasp secures it from falling out. Generally speaking though, it’s in decent nick considering that it’s heading on for seventy years now!
A classic piece that would make a great addition to your bar or drinks trolley.
P.S. These ice crushers normally sell for around R1000 online.
