Extendable Dining Room Table

If you’re in the market for a dining room table and are a fan of vintage South African design, then look no further! Sadly I can’t tell you much about Novocraft, the company responsible for manufacturing this fantastic extendable dining room table – generally speaking there’s not that much info on old SA furniture manufacturers, and Novocraft seem to be one of the rarer names, which means that there’s even less about them out there. I can tell you though that it looks like their factory was based in Germiston, and that they were popular in the 1960s and ’70s. I’d guess that this table dates to the early 1970s, and it looks like the base of the table is solid wood (possibly kiaat), with the top being an excellent quality veneer. We’ve sanded the top down, and resealed it with a water-based varnish, but the legs were in better nick, so we’ve left them as is. The mechanism to open and close the table works really well – just pull the two sides apart and flip over the middle piece of wood, which is suspended just below the table top, out of view.

Unfortunately the chairs in the photos aren’t for sale as they belong to our dining room table, but any simple wooden chairs would probably go just as well!

Note: Closed the table seats six people, extended it will seat eight people.

Dimensions: 73cm tall x 97cm wide x 2.4m long (extended)/ 1.8m long (closed)
