I think this must be the very first black globe we’ve ever sold? I’ve seen contemporary globes in black before, but never an original vintage version! Most sites seem to date today’s Replogle globe to the 1960s – Rhodesia features on the map, so it must be post 1965, making it in the region of fifty years old. For it’s age, it’s not in bad nick – the base has a lovely shine to it, but the seam that joins the two hemispheres is quite worn, and there are also other patches where the globe is a bit tired looking. Even with the damage though, this is still a very collectible globe, that normally sells for in the region of $150 (R2100)!
P.S. An interesting aside: apparently these black globes were given to customers who bought the entire Encyclopædia Britannica set
