Danish BR Keramik Teapot

R390.00 R234.00

I love what I do – I mean, who would moan about getting to shop for a living? – but I do see a lot of very similar items quite often. Not that I’m complaining – most of them I really love! But it’s not that often that I come across a name  I’ve never heard before, which makes today’s striking teapot that much more interesting!

The base is stamped ‘Denmark BR’, with the BR being a reference to BR (Brothers Rasmussen) Keramik – a wholesaler of ceramics who commissioned works from various ceramicists, and then released them under the BR brand. Today’s teapot was designed in 1958 by Einer Hellerøe – another name I’ve never come across before!

Hellerøe and his daughter, Jette, were Danish potters who worked in their own studio for many years, but also produced designs for BR Keramik, as well as a number of other brands. Today’s design goes by the name ‘Amazonas‘ and was designed in the late 1950s, and as far as I can tell, manufactured through to the early ’60s. As with most Scandinavian designs, pieces by BR Keramik have become increasingly sought after in recent years, with today’s teapot being one of the rarer pieces, and commanding some pretty decent prices – one Etsy selling is asking a rather crazy $430 for it – that’s R6200 in our rather sad currency!

Note: On the whole the teapot is in good condition, but there are some very minor nicks in the glaze, and one or two gaps in the rattan handle (see photos)

Dimensions: 11cm tall (excl. handle) x 14.5cm in diameter
