We bought these lovely ink on canvas drawings from a small gallery in Durban about eight years ago, but sadly they’re just a wee bit too romantic for the somewhat more masculine aesthetic in our new home. I know they’re not vintage or retro, but they’re really quite lovely so I’m happy to show them off on Mint- hopefully there’ll be a one or two Minters out there who’ll be interested in them! The writing comes from a series of poems entitled ‘Stray Birds’, written by Rabindranath Tagore, the first Asian poet to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. The drawings, which look to me to be ink on canvas, are by Yvette Terblanche. I’m afraid I don’t know anything about the artist, although there is an illustrator by the name of Yvette Terblanche whose work is very similar, so I would assume it’s the same Yvette, and that she’s still producing beautiful artworks. Frustratingly the packers managed to stick some packing tape directly onto the image of the bird, so there’s a bit of sticky mess in the one spot (see photos), but otherwise they’re a clean pair. The rest of the marks that appear to be dirt are actually part of the artworks.
A lovely pair for a bedroom or living area – we had them in our lounge in Durban and they looked fantastic!
P.S. I paid R1500 for the pair in 2008 (I still have the original invoice – quite proud of my filing skills!)
Dimensions: Each canvas measures 45cm long x 30cm wide x 4.5cm deep
