Contemporary Jabu Nene Vase

I probably shouldn’t admit it, given what an amazing South African institution it is, but I’m not the biggest fan of Ardmore pottery. I’m in love with their fabrics, but their animal inspired ceramics just don’t do it for me, which is a good thing really because I don’t think I could afford as much as a sugar bowl! But that doesn’t mean that I don’t have a great appreciation for the skills of the artists involved in the production of Ardmore, one of these being Jabu Nene, the woman responsible for today’s striking vase! The opposite of the OTT kitschness typical of Ardmore pieces, today’s vase is super restrained, with the only decoration being cut away rings revealing the base clay underneath. It’s also a simple shape, not massive, and with a matte finish is quite a humble piece – and that’s why I love it: serious talent that’s so good it doesn’t need to shout, “Look at me!”, but can just be.

P.S. A similarly styled cut-away bowl by Jabu Nene carried an auction estimate of R2000-R3000 at a local auction house in 2017
