Child’s Art Deco Part Coffee Set

I’ve always love these art deco kids’ tea and coffee sets! They’re so beautifully made I’ve often wondered if they’re not for ridiculously measly servings of real tea and coffee, but I’ve just stumbled upon the story of Akro Agate, the American company responsible for producing this beautiful little coffee set, and they are indeed intended as toys.

Founded in Ohio in 1911, the company first specialised in making marbles, which makes complete sense when you look at the swirly green glass that our set is made from. The marble business proved very successful, but in 1932 Akro Agate stopped the production of marbles, and moved instead into a range of children’s tea sets, ashtrays, and other novelty items. Their new range was made of pressed, opaque glass, which featured coloured streaks, which the company referred to as ‘blended colours’, but today the unusual style of glass evident in our coffee set, is commonly known as ‘slag glass’. Unfortunately after the war Akro Agate found it hard to compete with the cheap imports that were flooding the market, and in 1951 they closed their doors.

So there you have it! A nice bit of history, and a really beautiful coffee set that should make some little girl or boy very happy indeed!

P.S. A slightly more complete version of our coffee set is currently for sale on Etsy for £140 (R2500)! Also please pay attention to the dimensions below – these cups and saucers really are tiny!

Dimensions: Coffee cups – 4cm tall x4.5 cm in diameter; Saucers – 8cm in diameter; Side plates – 9.5cm in diameter; Medium jug – 6.5cm tall x 5.5cm in diameter; Small jug – 4cm tall x 4.5cm in diameter
