Carlton Ware Snack Platter

I love the name of this Carlton Ware pattern – ‘Windswept’! Isn’t that just lovely? Romantic, and also quite descriptive of those dancing leaves! The maker’s mark dates this kidney shaped platter to between 1936-1961, so it’s in remarkably good condition for its years, in fact it barely has a mark on it! And not only is this quite a striking piece of china with that wonderful dirty pink glaze that runs along its rim, but it’s also a decent size, which makes it quite practical. Whether it’s for a tasty bit of brie and cranberry jelly, or a healthier selection of crudités, it’s definitely large enough to offer your dinner guests a good selection of snacks!

Dimensions: Approx. 33cm long x 15cm wide x 2.5cm deep

P.S. Interestingly while Carlton Ware is made in England, this particular design was registered in Australia. By the mid 1930s the Japanese had become highly proficient at copying good ceramics and undercutting the original design houses. But Carlton Ware discovered a clause in the ‘South East Asia Treaty Organisation’ that meant that designs registered in Australia could not be copied by the Japanese. To protect themselves against cheap imitations Carlton Ware started registering their designs in Australia, hence the rather confusing backstamp!
