On a recent trip to the Karoo we stoppped past Bloemfontein. It was raining buckets, and we didn’t have a lot of time, but with dreams of finding dirt-cheap treasures in a small(ish) town like Bloem I couldn’t help trying to track down a second hand shop or two! Sadly the owner of the one shop I did manage to find had different ideas – nearly everything was more expensive than Mint! – but after a bit of haggling I did land up buying one or two pieces, including this lovely brass seagull sculpture. The marble base is slightly worn, but the birds themselves, which are beautifully posed on that tiny point, are quite spectacular! And if you consider that a very similar piece is for sale on eBay for $130 (R1800), then I think it was well worth the trudge through the rain – although Justin may not quite agree!
Dimensions: 31cm tall; Base measures 10cm in diameter
