I wish I knew something about Elweco, the company responsible for this beautifully crafted brass seagull. I’ve come across the name a few times over the years, and I know that there was a Japanese firm that went by the same name, but they made novelty thermoses and other kitchenalia? I’m not sure if these are the same people, although the logo is very similar, so who knows! What I can tell you though is that this a quality piece of brass that’s been brilliantly sculpted – the movement in the bird reminds me of the cover of the classic novel, Jonathan Livingston Seagull. It’s quite modernist in design – most people refer to it as a mid-century piece, so it’s definitely got some age to it.
A really fantastic artwork that deserves pride of place in someone’s home.
P.S. The base of the sculpture still looks a bit grubby because we wanted to avoid losing the label, which wold have happened if we had polished it properly
