Art Nouveau Copper Planter

R230.00 R138.00

This copper planter is a bit worse for wear, but so would you be after a hundred years, and to be honest it actually looked a bit better before we cleaned it! Washing it brightened the copper and revealed all of the marks, whereas before it was a beautiful dark copper colour. Luckily though it doesn’t take very long for copper to oxidise so the marks should disappear soon enough, or if you prefer the bright copper look, then a good polish with Brasso will probably get rid of some of those marks (but you’ll have to put some serious elbow grease into it!). The planter was manufactured by Joseph Sankey and Sons (JS&S) who were producing metalware in the early 1900s, which fits in perfectly with the art nouveau period (1890-1910). Given its age it’s not surprising that it’s not in into condition, and in addition to the marks there are one or two dings, and the base is slightly wobbly. But none of that takes away from a what a handsome pot plant holder this is – just look how beautiful that orchid looks sitting in it! This is one of those ones I’m tempted to hold onto…..

P.S. I just want to mention that this pot plant holder is probably lighter than you’d expect it to be – maybe a strange thing to point out, but I was surprised when I picked it up! I don’t think it reflects on the quality at all – JS&S planters like these can sell for as much as R1000, but it’s obviously reasonably thin copper sheeting, which I suppose it would have to be in order to have the pattern pressed into it.
