When we bought our house in Joburg there were very few remnants of the original design, but there were a few elements that hinted at its art deco style, including some great towel rails! They’re not that different to your modern rails (although I suspect they were made with a much better quality of material!), but slight differences make all the difference when it comes to design! The actual rail is tuned at an angle to create a diamond shape, as opposed to a more conventional square tube – just a bit more interesting, and the pieces that attach to the wall are slightly more elongate than we’re used to. On the downside though they’re single towel rails, which is why I only kept the one in the guest bathroom (pictured here). For our main bathroom I replaced it with a double rail just to be practical – if I wasn’t so lazy I would have kept both and just folded the towels over – there’s more than enough space for two towels folded neatly in half.
A hard to come by and very attractive towel rail that would make a nice feature in a contemporary bathroom.
Note: The photos are of the towel rail in our spare bathroom, but the rail that is for sale is absolutely identical to this one.
Dimensions: 84cm long x 9cm deep (when attached to the wall)
