Antique Photographic Plates (Set)

I found this box of glass Ilford photographic plates on a recent trip to Durban, and was absolutely delighted when I opened the box and discovered that the plates had images on them! The box dates to the turn of the 20th century, making these negatives around 110 years old! The images are really interesting, with the most wonderful compositions – my favourite image is that of a gentleman holding up a rather large fish, and there’s another portrait of the same man with his dog – just fantastic! You can make out the photos reasonably well just by holding them up to the light (it would be great to display them in a light box of sorts), but Justin also rather cleverly took some photos of some of the negatives and then reversed the images, so that we could get a better idea of how they would look developed – scroll through to see Justin’s pics at the end….

A really beautiful and really interesting bit of local history – I’m pretty sure that these images were taken in Durban – there’s even a monkey in one of the pics, a sure sign that these photos come from my home town!

Note: There were a few old scraps of papers in the box as well (see photos), which had been used to separate the plates. Also, we’ve only shown a few of the images – there are eight in total

Dimensions: Each plate measures 16.5cm long x 12cm wide
