This antique cast-iron bed really is quite beautiful, with its tarnished black paintwork showing that’s it’s lived a full life, and those wonderful floral badges taking something that has quite an industrial look to it, and just softening the edges. But for me there’s also something else that makes this bed (which I suspect might be French!) very special, and it’s something that you won’t really notice – it slots together like a jigsaw puzzle! There are no screws holding these rather hefty pieces of cast iron together, just engineering, and I really like that! It also distinguishes it from modern reproductions, which I’m pretty sure would be constructed quite differently.
At the moment the bed is literally just a frame, so it needs a board and a mattress, but a trip to your local hardware store and foam shop should sort that problem out quick sticks, and then you’ll have on your hands a really special and authentic piece of furniture that would be the star of any guest bedroom or verandah! Ooh, just imagine having a verandah large enough to show off a day bed like this!
