Antique Apothecary Jars (Each)

At Mint we pride ourselves in selling items that are as close to perfect as possible, but today’s jars are definitely an exception to that rule, being in rather a sorry state! The lid on one of the smaller jars has been very shoddily glued (not by ourselves, I assure you), and there are also some quite serious chips to the rims. The larger jar has less structural issues, but the inside of it is very stained.

So you might wonder then why I bought them? Well, apothecary jars of this age (they’re said to date to the late 18th century) are very hard to come by, and if you are lucky enough to find them, you invariably have to hand over a week’s salary to be able to afford them! In good condition today’s jars, which were made by the York Glass Company (YGC) in England, can sell for as much as $325 (R4600), with the only other YGC jar I found for sale going for $175 (R2500)! So while our jars may be very far from perfect, they’re still very easy on the eyes, and probably a pretty decent investment!
