Alessi 9090 Moka Pot

I couldn’t believe my luck when I spotted this Alessi moka pot the other day! Designed by Richard Sapper in 1979 the ‘9090′ espresso maker is Alessi’s most famous – and most sought after – coffee pot! It was their first ever espresso maker and the first of several Compasso d’Oro awards that Alessi received, as well as being the first ever Alessi item exhibited at the MOMA in New York! That’s one impressive little pot!

And not only is it rather handsome, but it’s a very clever design too – the enlarged base allows for the maximum distribution of heat, and that rather peculiar looking spout prevents dripping. Then of course there’s the crazy way that it opens – no plain old screw-top here, instead the handle acts as a lever, opening the coffee pot with a simple flick of the hand!

P.S. New the Alessi six-cup ‘9090’ espresso maker sells for around R3000!
