In recent years I’ve become a very big fan of the late South African artist, Walter Battiss. Granted not all of his work appeals to me – his earlier bushmen-inspired paintings aren’t really to my taste, and I can’t quite fathom Fook Island, but the works that he’s best known for, his boldly coloured abstracts, I really love! And this 1976 book, simply entitled, Walter Battiss, by Murray Schoonraad, is full of them! The condition of the book isn’t too bad considering its age, but I think it could maybe do with a new plastic cover which would give it an instant facelift. Fortunately the inside of the book is pretty clean, with only one or two marks here and there.
