Jasmine Wood’s Ware Jug – SOLD

Jasmine Wood's Ware jug

Jasmine Wood's Ware jug

I’ve had a love affair with Wood’s Ware from the moment I spotted my first Beryl cup and saucer! I love all Wood’s Ware, but I have to say that the Beryl glaze is probably my most favourite. The glaze used on this jug is called Jasmine, and sadly it’s starting to show its age: there are some dark marks on the inside of the jug that won’t wash clean. There’s also a mark on the rim of the jug, but I think that this is actually a manufacturing defect, and not caused by wear. This ridged style that Wood’s Ware did so beautifully dates to the 1940s, so it’s not that suprising that there’s a bit of wear and tear. The perfect jug for serving hot custard (I know it’s not a summer dish, but in my mind custard’s an all year round treat!).

Dimensions: 12cm tall x 12cm in diameter

Pair of Wood’s Ware Serving Dishes – SOLD

Pair of Wood's Ware serving dishes

I have a very special place in my heart for Wood’s Ware. There’s just something so special about the shape of their ceramic ware and  the colours they used. Wood’s Ware is immediately recognisable by their use of ridged lines – it’s strange that something so simple could become a trade mark! Unfortunately the ridges aren’t that clear in these pics, but they’re there. Have a look at some of the other Wood’s Ware items I’ve sold to see what I’m talking about. This pair of casserole dishes are in near mint condition – there’re one or two very faint marks in the glaze, but other than that they’re pretty much perfect – which is very impressive given that they’re in the region of 60 years old (the maker’s mark dates to the 1940s)!

Beryl Wood’s Ware Gravy Boat – SOLD

1 Aug

Beryl Wood's Ware gravy boat

Beryl Wood's Ware gravy boat

There’s something so special about Wood’s Ware – their glazes are so serene, and their ridged design strangely contemporary. I know that a gravy boat isn’t really an every day item  anymore, but it’s definitely handy to have one when you do go to the effort of making a roast. This gravy boat and saucer are in perfect condition, although the saucer has a manufacturing fault in that it doesn’t sit completely flat, but to look at it’s pretty much mint, and the eneven base isn’t really a problem practically speaking either. Another lovely piece from one of my very favourite pottery houses.

Dimensions: Gravy boat – 7cm high x 10cm wide x 18cm long; Saucer – 21cm long x 13 cm wide

Pair of Wood's Ware Jugs

I know I’ve spoken about my love for Wood’s Ware quite a few times on this site, so you must know how delighted I was to come across not one, but two Wood’s Ware jugs in their fantastic Beryl glaze the other day! I’ve only ever seen the cups, saucers and dinner plates before and wasn’t even aware that they had included jugs in the design when they made these pieces in the 1940s. Both jugs are in perfect condition with some minor defects in the glaze, but for me this only adds to their beauty showing that a real person was involved in their production. I can just see the ladies sitting there dipping the jugs in the glaze – I’ve done it a few times and it aint that easy! P.S. Look at the detail on the handles – how lovely!

Dimensions: Medium jug: 12cm high x 12cm in diameter; Small jug: 11cm high x 11cm in diameter

Price: R250 for the pair
