Bread slicers come in all different shapes and colours, but this chrome version from Pineware has to be one of my favourite variations. I love it’s 1950s shape, and while I’m a big fan of colour in a kitchen, I also really like the industrial feel of the plain chrome plating. According to the one-pager promotional flyer that came with the machine, this version is the ”De Luxe” Model – although looking at their other models, I’m not really sure what differentiates it (aside from its obvious good looks!). For the most part the slicer is in good nick – it even has its original clamp – but there is some noticeable wear to the plastic knob that controls the thickness of your bread or meat. A beautiful piece of design that would look fantastic displayed on your kitchen counter.

4 Slice Pineware snackwich maker

4 Slice Pineware snackwich maker

This is one of the nicest snackwich makers I’ve ever come across! It’s a big boy, with space for four sarmies. I tried it out the other night and made the most delicious ham, cheese and tomato snackwiches (with a licking of mustard). Bizarrely, the thing I most like about this piece is its red light that indicates when the machine is hot enough to put your sandwiches in. The light’s bigger than on most snackwich machines, and for me it really makes it quite special. Perfect for lazy Sunday night dinners!

You’ve got to love the bright orange finish on this Pineware bread slicer! The paintwork is in suprisingly good nick, but there are still some surface scratches, and the chrome is a bit pitted and also slightly scratched – but it’s in great nick compared to most of the bread slicers you can find today. I’ve been suprised at how popular these slicers are. I’ve always been tempted to buy them (they are pretty cool looking!), but was worried that they’re obsolete in a contemporary kitchen – but it seems that there’re a lot of people out there who use them for cutting biltong and other bits of meat. A (semi) practical item that’s guaranteed to brighten up your kitchen.

It’s funny how things often come in batches: I won’t see something for ages, and then I’ll find a handful in a matter of a couple of weeks. That’s what’s happened lately with snackwich makers. I think that this was the third or fourth machine I found in the space of two weeks or so (one of them is sitting in my kitchen – didn’t quite make it to the blog!). There’s nothing fancy about this Pineware snackwich maker, but it is a really nice shape, and is in pretty good nick – although there are some scratches in the finish that don’t show up well in the pics, and the side clips are a little worse for wear. I like the fact that the sandwich plates have ridges, somehow I think that this will make for an even tastier toasted sarmie!

I’m amazed at the variety of breadslicers I come across! I think that this is a particularly clever version as it’s angled so that the bread, or whatever else you choose to slice, leans against the blade. The mechanism for moving the blade in order to get different thicknesses is also slightly different and is well designed so that it’s easy to move the blade – often these mechanisms become sticky over the years. Plus with its metallic finish, it’s quite a handsome machine and would look quite striking on display in your kitchen.

Note: For the most part the machine is quite clean, but there are some areas where the chrome is pitted/scratched, and the black painted metal is also showing signs of age in places.
